5 social media trends to think about in 2023
By: Sam Horsley | Social Media Lead
2023 is here and it’s pretty safe to say we’re all on social media in one way or another. We’re scrolling through content from the time we wake up to the time we go back to sleep.
Did you know, on average, folks are now spending 3 hours and 15 minutes on their phones per day?
From short form videos to AI, these are social media trends we believe will take over our feeds for the year.
Short form video and vlogging
With TikToks, YouTube Shorts and Instagram Reels succeeding in 2022, video content is continuing to be at the forefront of social media content creation, and we don’t see this stopping any time soon. Clips may be short, but we still lose hours at a time viewing hundreds of videos each day. It will be interesting to see which brands jump on this trend (and who does it well).
Whilst we’re on the subject of video, could this also be the year for the return of YouTube vlogging.
Now that Tiktok is allowing up to 3-minute clips, you’re about to see a peak of users vlogging once again… Is it retro trends coming back round again or will this be a new way to vlog, in short form?
People love nothing more than good content at their fingertips whenever they want - and love to move on just as quickly - so this a trend we think will definitely go big very soon!
Is LinkedIn the new place to be?
The algorithm on both TikTok and LinkedIn are working in creator’s favours, unlike so many other platforms (ahem, Instagram). They are becoming 2 of the easiest platforms to grow on.
Is it time for brands on LinkedIn to shift their strategy to engage and promote themselves in new ways? Using your teams’ personal profiles helps to spread the brand message organically – and it doesn’t get more cost effective than that.
B2B marketing could be getting the boost it needs (wahoo) and could this see the change in LinkedIn ads? Are you about to get better results for your pennies? So many questions and we’re excited for the answers to reveal themselves this year…
And don’t forget Twitter and its new owner conflict last year… You’re likely see brands, and likely individual users too, flying away from that platform nest and have some free budget to use elsewhere…
Community building with love
Users are feeling the fatigue of suggested content, so it’s time to take action into our own hands by working the algorithms to our own advantage.
People are going to be posting more of what they love with a view to build a bigger online community. Making this the year to share and enjoy everything and everyone.
Social platforms themselves are creating more accessible ways to build and grow communities to get people talking. Brands, influencers, content creators, and the everyday user are likely to follow this trend for 2023.
Authenticity and transparency
Long gone are the days of perfectly curated social media feeds. They feel a lot like BS to us all now.
People are following real people who make them feel good and who they can relate to their honesty with, so being yourself and showing who you are is the way forward – who would have thought it?!
“Social media is designed to make you think: ‘Maybe I should be somewhere else, doing something else, with someone else’. But if you always think your happiness is somewhere else, it will never be where you are.” – Steven Bartlett.
Along with this, brands are ready to share more of this type of UGC content, promoting trusty worthy sources and reliable content.
Although content is raw, it is still intentional. Brands can utilise this to tell their brand stories and campaigns through real voices.
AI… could this be real, or just fantasy?
We’ve spoken a lot about how 2023 will be showing the real world around you from brands and users, however, we’re about to jump to the most unreal type of content creation you can get: AI (Artificial intelligence).
It’s something that will be all around you this year, and this is only the beginning. Look out for AI marketing tools that can help give you a strategic edge to your marketing this year.
So, what can you do as a brand to get on board with these trends.
Be reel (get it?!), and tell your story.
Share behind the scenes, people want to know everything
Create content that is honest and trustworthy. Not only that, create something that is meaningful for to your brand, you don’t always have to follow the crowd
Find a way to use UGC to your advantage and use it within your brand strategy. Get people involved, build your community
Educate, inspire and as always on social, HAVE FUN.
